HIgh-flying kiwi lawyer victim of suspected hit-and-run in Sydney

Highly accomplished 28-year-old lawyer Mitch East tragically lost his life in a suspected hit-and-run incident in Sydney, Australia, as he exited an Uber early Sunday morning.

The tragedy happened in east Sydney’s Tamarama. He died at the scene around 4 am.

His mother spoke of her grief at the loss of her only child, describing him as her ‘reason for living’

Supreme Court Justice Sir William Young told legacy media the loss of East was ‘ a terrible waste of a life that held so much promise.’ He praised the young lawyer’s intelligence, work ethic, and empathetic nature. East obtained a postgraduate degree from Harvard University and had offers of further opportunities from Cambridge University and New York University.

A GoFundMe page set up in East’s memory has raised nearly $100,000 in donations, reflecting the community’s effort to support his grieving family and partner. Several prominent New Zealand sports stars have pledged their support.

The search for the vehicle alleged to be involved in the incident continues, with Australian police examining CCTV footage to understand the circumstances surrounding East’s death. The investigation is focusing on a white SUV captured on CCTV in the vicinity at the time of the death.
