Labour leader Chris Hipkins has sharply criticised the second phase of the COVID-19 Royal Commission of Inquiry, claiming its terms of reference have been deliberately constructed to give airtime to “conspiracy theorists”.
Speaking on Herald NOW, Hipkins accused the National-led Government of politicising the inquiry by focusing on vaccine safety and lockdown decisions made after New Zealand First left the Labour coalition, suggesting this selective scope was intended to shape the outcome and undermine the previous Government.
He warned that the inquiry risks becoming a stage for “theatrics” rather than a genuine effort to learn from the pandemic, though he confirmed he is cooperating through written responses.

NZ First remained in power and supporting Jacindagrad until they were ousted in the 2020 elections later that year. Getting booted out of parliament in late 2020 was the best thing which ever happened to NZ First because they were outside parliament when the dictatorial mandates began under a worsened Jacindagrad the following year 2021
