Human remains captured on camera at Pike River

Yesterday, police released a statement confirming they have captured images of human remains in the Pike River Mine.

The images were taken in the furthest reaches of the mine from its entrance, and come as the result of two boreholes recently drilled through rock enabled police to investigate the conditions of that area of the mine.

Police believe 6 to 8 men were working in the area where the remains were found, although they have not yet been able to identify the remains at this stage.

The announcement comes on the eve of the 11th anniversary of the Pike River Mine disaster, in which 29 men died when an explosion rocked the mine on 19 November 2010.
