Jailed paedophile worked as Santa at Auckland malls

Timothy Fisher news

Timothy Fisher, a former Auckland teacher with indecency convictions, not only abused nine girls while employed at a tutoring company but also worked as a Christmas Santa at three Westfield malls in 2022 and 2023 without undergoing proper police vetting.

Now serving over four years in prison, Fisher was able to hide his past under the Clean Slate Act, despite multiple warnings to the Teaching Council.

Scentre Group, which operates the malls, told legacy media it is reviewing vetting processes after learning of the failure, while police confirmed they had advised the Santa photography supplier against rehiring him.

The case has sparked calls for reform of the Clean Slate Act to prevent sexual offenders from concealing convictions when applying for jobs involving children.

  1. It just gets better and better ,doesn’t it? (sarcasm). Yes, funnily enough, proper vetting is 100% essential in these circumstances.

  2. Why bother with criminal records if a “clean slate” kicks in after just a couple years? Why bother with any records at all, what are we even doing anymore?

We used to be a serious country.
