Magnitude 4.1 earthquake strikes near Pōrangahau in Southern Hawke’s Bay

A magnitude 4.1 earthquake struck within 5km of Pōrangahau in southern Hawke’s Bay at 6:59 AM this morning.

According to GeoNet, the earthquake, which occurred at a depth of 18km, caused “moderate” shaking.

The tremor was potentially felt in several central North Island towns, including Castlepoint, Dannevirke, Eketahuna, Feilding, and Hastings. So far, 69 individuals have reported feeling the earthquake through the government’s GeoNet website.

In June, Hawke’s Bay and the East Coast/Poverty Bay region experienced a swarm of over 80 earthquakes. At that time, GNS Science described such swarms as “not uncommon” for the region.
