Man shot by Police in Grey Lynn following firearms incident

Wallingford Street Grey Lynn news

Police have shot and injured a 32-year-old man following an armed incident in Grey Lynn earlier this evening.

The man is now in a critical condition in hospital.

“Police staff were initially called to Wallingford Street in Grey Lynn just after 5pm after being notified a man in an agitated state was standing on the street with a firearm,” says Auckland City District Commander Superintendent Karyn Malthus.

“Prior to Police arriving, the man has fired several shots from the street at a house we now understand was his own residence.

“Officers went towards the man and called upon him to put down his firearm. He has however raised it towards the Police staff and been shot once.”

Officers immediately provided the man with medical attention and requested ambulance assistance.

Police did a search of the house. Nobody was located inside the property.

“This incident would have been incredibly traumatic for the Grey Lynn community on what would have seemed like an average Monday evening,” says Superintendent Malthus.

“And we also want to reassure them that there is no ongoing risk.”

There will be an increased Police presence in the area in the coming days as Police conduct a scene examination and make enquiries, including speaking with local residents.

“I want to also acknowledge the huge impact this incident will have had on the officers involved. They acted quickly to ensure nobody else was injured and we will be providing them with support,” says Superintendent Malthus.

The Independent Police Conduct Authority will be notified, and a Critical Incident Investigation is underway.

A cordon remains on Wallingford Street (where it intersects with Murdoch Road) and a scene guard will be in place overnight at the property.
