Calls grow for answers over Manawanui’s sinking near Royal retreat in Samoa

There are growing demands for transparency surrounding the HMNZS Manawanui’s grounding and sinking near Samoa in October 2024, particularly over whether the Navy vessel was involved in a security operation for King Charles and Queen Camilla ahead of CHOGM.

A Court of Inquiry report cited human error and operational deficiencies, revealing the ship was conducting a rapid environmental survey ordered by CHOGM Command near the Sinalei Resort, where the Royals later stayed.

Critics, including security and legal experts speaking to state-funded media, question who initiated the mission and whether it was appropriately justified, noting possible legal implications and a lack of clarity over the operation’s purpose.

AUT Law Professor Paul Myburgh said the nature of the HMNZS Manawanui’s mission when it sank could have legal consequences for those affected. He explained that while naval vessels were traditionally immune from lawsuits, “nowadays of course governmental vessels are often involved in commercial activity as well.”

Myburgh noted the shift toward a “restrictive theory of sovereign immunity,” where courts may have jurisdiction if the ship was engaged in non-governmental or routine operations.

“This is why I’ve been wanting to get to the bottom of exactly what they were doing,” he said, describing the Manawanui’s deployment as having been carried out “on a very adhoc basis.”

  1. If the DEI hire and Judith Collins had an inch of integrity they should both say at the top of their lungs: we f&_$#d up.

    Not holding my breath

    • As far as I recall none died, they rescued all the dildos. Although we’re still waiting for the land based ones to show transparency.

  2. Had they been ordered to search for White Supremacist frogmen hiding in the reef and foil their plan to attack the heads of State and take over the world?
