Meth-affected driver Norton Sowerby has been sentenced to eight years in prison after driving through lowered barrier arms at a Hamilton train crossing, causing a collision that killed three of his friends and seriously injured a fourth.
Despite passengers pleading with him to stop, Sowerby overtook another vehicle, ignored flashing warnings, and drove onto the tracks, where his car was struck by an oncoming train.
He initially denied being the driver and was seen swallowing pills at the scene, later returning a meth reading six times the high-risk limit.
Justice Downs condemned his “profoundly reckless” actions and the devastation caused to multiple families, imposing a minimum non-parole period of four years.
Kill three people then likely back on the streets in 4 years time. The judge even gave him a 25% discount for pleading guilty. You have got to be kidding. The Sentencing Act is a joke. These ridiculous ‘discounts’ for pleading guilty, poor upbringing, drug and alcohol addiction should be scrapped along with early release from prison.
Common denominator
What a ridiculously light sentence- and reckoning that he’ll be out in 4 years.
This is mental! Kills 3 people – while taking illegal drugs…and the killing caused by his taking of the drugs and actions that followed. He should be in jail for at least 20/30 years!
