Officials investigating the Minneapolis church shooting say the attacker, 23-year-old transgender Robin (Robert) Westman, was motivated by an obsession with killing children.
Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O’Hara described the shooter as someone who “appeared to hate all of us,” but whose overriding fixation was targeting children.
A note left behind and messages scrawled on firearms revealed deep animosity toward religious groups, Jewish people, and political figures, including explicit threats against President Trump. FBI Director Kash Patel labelled the massacre “an act of domestic terrorism motivated by a hate-filled ideology,” underscoring that investigators believe the killer sought to turn violent fantasies into a notorious reality.
Authorities have also pointed to Westman’s disturbing fascination with previous mass shootings, suggesting the attack may have been influenced by a copycat impulse. Though the shooter had ties to the church, having once attended its school, officials believe the deeper motive stemmed from this toxic blend of child-targeted violence and extremist rhetoric rather than a specific grievance. Investigators caution that the full motive may never be known, but they stressed that the combination of hate, notoriety-seeking, and fixation on children’s vulnerability makes this case especially chilling.
The two victims of this week’s attack have been named as Fletcher Merkel, 8, and Harper Moyski, 10.
Meanwhile U.S. Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr told Fox News his department will be investigating whether drugs such as Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) prescribed to the killer may have been a contributing factor to the violence.
