Mihiata Te Rore, 62, was fatally mauled by three dogs while visiting a property in Kaihu, Northland, despite Animal Control officers having visited the address four times, including the day before the attack.

Kaipara District Council told state media complaints about the dogs dated back to November and staff had repeatedly tried to engage with the owner, discuss compliance, and ensure the animals were secured, but were unable to remove the dogs when they could not contact the owner.

The incident marks the third fatal dog attack in Northland in four years, prompting renewed calls for stronger action from local and central government.

The dogs have since been impounded and are expected to be destroyed once the police investigation is complete, while the council’s animal management team continues its own investigation.

  1. Well NZ is obsessed with dogs who are from the wolf family it’s bound to get worse. Dogs need trained and to be outside. The people are stupid.

  2. Councils do an extremely poor job dealing with dog issues. I had to call our council over 10 tiimes to deal with a barking dog next door. I have long fallen out with the owners who are the dumbest dog owners. EVER This is their 6th dog while we have lived here. They NEVER a walk their dogs. They go away and leave them at the house with someone coming and feeding them once a day. One dog died while they were away once. HOW SICK IS THAT? How fricken hard is it to stop your dog from barking continuously??? you set the dog up to be happy and content in a safe secure environment where it can’t see every person who passes by . It’s not F8cken rocket science. Anyway I said the council had better do something before we lost it the last time and finally we have silence. ITS. NOT THAT HARD. we have owned dogs for over w0 years and never had one complaint because we are good dog owners.

These idiot owners who get dogs, never train them or walk them or let them look out to’ see people passing by are just idiots who should never own dogs. If council did their job properly at the outset none of this would happen.

Meanwhile my parents lost 10 sheep because of some idiots with shar peis who had attcked before and who the council already knew about. I made the council pay for the loss of the sheep and the vet bills tk have the others euthanised. And they did pay too because they obviously knew they had majorly dropped the bill. If dogs are agressive or attack, YOU DONT GIVE THEM OR THEIR OWNERS ANOTHER CHANCE FFS.

  3. It appears the Kaipara District Council is at fault here
And has cost this person their life
Being incompetent in dereliction of duty and asleep at the wheel
And being unresponsive as to the seriousness surrounding the situation in failing to respond in a professional manner
Problems don’t go away and need to be dealt with promptly
Where will the next dog attack and loss of life be?

  4. RIP Mihi, she was in my class all through high school, and did not deserve this, this is personal, and we want answers, and accountability from the KDC, and no it is not the fault of the dog control officer’s, they can only work with the tool’s given then.

  5. I need to ask when they say visitor do they mean someone invited onto the property or trespassing. Not to condone the behaviour of the owners at all but looking for means to prevent the dogs being put down. If the property had signs that removed implied right of access and the person did not have permission to enter the property then a case can be made. The owner absolutely should be prosecuted.
