Elon Musk has accused the UK Labour Government of pursuing “any excuse for censorship” as the Office of Communications (Ofcom) continues an investigation into his social media platform X over allegations of AI-generated porn and child abuse imagery.
The probe focuses on X’s AI chatbot, Grok, which can generate sexual images of people, including children, at users’ request. Supporters of Musk have pointed out that other AI platforms are capable of similar outputs without facing an Ofcom investigation, a claim Musk endorsed by replying: “They want any excuse for censorship.” He then escalated his criticism, attacking Prime Minister Keir Starmer by saying he has “a lower approval rating than Nicolas Maduro,” and backing several US-based posts critical of the UK government’s record on online safety and policing.
The dispute has drawn in senior UK and US figures, with Musk sharing a post from a US lawmaker threatening sanctions against the Prime Minister and the UK if X were banned.
Technology Secretary Liz Kendall said the government would support Ofcom if it chose to block X for failing to comply with UK law, calling the sexual manipulation of images of women and children “despicable and abhorrent.” Ofcom confirmed it is carrying out an ‘expedited assessment’ and said X responded to urgent contact, after which Grok’s image-altering features were restricted for non-paying users.
Kendall said it was “totally unacceptable” for such functions to remain available to paying users and expects an update from the regulator within days. Under the Online Safety Act, Ofcom has powers to impose heavy fines, pursue criminal action, or effectively ban platforms by cutting off access through service providers.
