NZ First has unveiled a 15-point health policy, shifting focus from treating illness to prevention amid a chronic disease crisis affecting a million Kiwis.
Leader Winston Peters said the plan would prioritise metabolic health, nutrition education and an independent review of dietary guidelines. It also promised informed consent as a core standard, health coaches in general practice and fewer administrative burdens on GPs.
Other pledges included hospital trials of intravenous vitamin C around surgery, easier access to recognised nutrients, vitamin D research, funding for nutritional approaches to mental illness and support for soil health and farm innovation.
Peters argued a small share of the $33 billion health budget spent on prevention could reduce chronic disease and long-term costs.
