New Zealand has joined 14 other nations in strongly condemning the October 7th, 2023, terrorist attacks by Hamas and calling for immediate action to address the ongoing conflict in Gaza.

In a joint statement issued ahead of the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly, Foreign Ministers from New Zealand, Andorra, Australia, Canada, Finland, France, Iceland, Ireland, Luxembourg, Malta, Norway, Portugal, San Marino, Slovenia and Spain, demanded an immediate ceasefire and the unconditional release of all hostages, including the remains of those killed.

The group reaffirmed their unwavering support for a two-state solution where Israel and a democratic Palestine coexist peacefully within recognized and secure borders. They emphasized the importance of unifying Gaza and the West Bank under the Palestinian Authority and expressed grave concern over the mounting civilian casualties and deteriorating humanitarian situation in Gaza.

The statement also welcomed recent commitments by the President of the Palestinian Authority, including condemnation of the October 7th attacks, a call to disarm Hamas, reforms to education and prisoner payments, and plans to hold democratic elections within a year. The ministers expressed readiness to recognize the State of Palestine as a necessary step toward peace and urged other nations to do the same.

Additionally, they called on countries that have not yet established normal relations with Israel to begin discussions to promote regional integration. Looking ahead, the ministers pledged to work on a post-conflict plan for Gaza that ensures reconstruction, excludes Hamas from governance, and promotes long-term stability in the region.

  1. Pigs following the bucket. The French and Brits have reluctantly gone down this path, having seen the extent of domestic and international outrage, now the rest have felt obliged to follow suit.

The fact is, its meaningless tokenism. Israel has the US behind it, so it will do as it likes. This will see the Palestinians removed from their own land by the neo colonial colonisers and probably forced to move to Iran, their strongest supporter. Who, no doubt, in time, will be attacked again, as the “greater Israel” experiment rolls on. Its all a disgrace and it shows what mostly morally bereft trash, we, in the collective West, elect to office.

  2. It is all window dressing. Take a look at the conditions imposed on Palestinians in order to get this endoresment. It is the ame old “Make Palestine an offer it cannot accept. What Palestinian would accept disarming in the knowlege that Israel’s proven policy is ethnic cleansing and even genocide?
To quote the Guardian article above: “To the Palestinians will go empty statements and diplomatic gimmickry. To Israelis, the land, the resources, the wealth. Some deal.”
