NZ Retains “When, Not If” stance on Palestinian statehood recognition

New Zealand has decided against recognising Palestinian statehood at this stage, maintaining its long-standing “when, not if” position.

Foreign Affairs Minister Winston Peters told the UN General Assembly that with Hamas controlling Gaza and no clear pathway forward, there is not yet a viable and legitimate Palestinian state.

Cabinet rejected conditional recognition in favour of caution, citing risks of empowering Hamas or entrenching Israeli intransigence.

Peters stressed New Zealand’s commitment to a two-state solution but said recognition must wait until conditions improve, including Hamas disbanding, disarming and releasing hostages.

While acknowledging other nations’ “good intentions,” Peters warned early recognition had only hardened positions.

Alongside this stance, New Zealand pledged an additional $10m in humanitarian aid for Gaza, reaffirming its calls for a ceasefire, adherence to international law, and an end to Israeli settlement expansion.

    • New Zealand will remain a US colony as long as people keep voting mainstream and given the truly moronic comments excusing this awful decision, I don’t hold out much hope that things will change here, anytime soon.

  1. Luxon Winston Cabol are zionist agents in any way. Luxon publically claimed war criminal witch Madeleine Albright as his peer in politics.

NZ is one of the States that have recognised Kosovo as independent. Do Kosovo has any legitamacy or viability? Madeleine Albright instigated NATO’s illegal war created the rougue province Kosovo. Therer are more UN member States recognised Palestinian state than Kosovo. In terms of world population nearly 90% recognised Palestinian state but only 20% of the world population recognised Kosovo as independent.

Death of National government in the next election for sure. Under MMP, even a 5% swing will do. Majority of kiwis are disgusted with thiis governmet’s stand on Palestinian state .

  3. In recent years, especially amid the erosion of formal international law, there’s been a noticeable shift in language.
Instead of invoking “international law,” many leaders, diplomats, and institutions now refer to “international standards,” “global norms,” or “rules-based order.”
    Why the Shift?
These terms are more flexible, less binding, and often politically palatable—especially when legal enforcement is weak or contested.
Often, these phrases signal strategic ambiguity, moral posturing, or soft power choreography—especially when enforcement is unlikely or uneven.
It’s diplomacy as ritual theater, where the scroll of law is replaced by the dance of norms.
The UN – International Law is a convenient Flagship of distraction.
That keeps shifting the GOAL posts on an uneven playing field.

    • Israel let it happen. They had Hamas attack plan weeks before Oct 7 – it has been reported. They stood down for hours. No hostages would have been taken otherwise.

Israel killed many of their own that day too. You can see and hear evidence of this from tank commanders and helicopter gunship pilots.

Also, no babies were beheaded, nor women raped. Propaganda that has been debunked by Israeli news

  4. Most were killed by IDF under the Hanibal doctrine. Go to “grayzone” website of honest Jews and learn the truth on what really happened.

Squatters have no right for self-defence. Israel has occupied the land and hence they do not have the right of a state under the International law.

Hamas was simply wanting over 30000 teenagers prisoned by IDF to be exchanged for any hostages taken. This went bad and played into the long term genocide plan of Israel.
