Documents released under the Official Information Act have revealed New Zealand, Australia, Canada, the UK and US have explored expanding their existing biometric-sharing arrangements to allow foreign border agencies to check citizens’ criminal convictions using fingerprints.
However, NZ agencies found there was “no basis under current legislation” to allow overseas authorities to query NZ Police or court conviction information for immigration purposes.
No information was shared during the exploratory work, and Migration 5 heads shelved the proposal in April.
