A recent RNZ–Reid Research poll found 20.7 percent of New Zealanders have a lot of trust in police and 50.5 percent have a fair amount of trust, while 20 percent reported not much trust and 5.7 percent said they had no trust, with 3 percent unsure.
Trust was lowest among Te Pāti Māori supporters, with 48.2 percent reporting little or no trust, followed by Green supporters at 44.1 percent and Labour supporters at 28.2 percent, compared with 36 percent of New Zealand First supporters, 18 percent of ACT supporters, and 12.4 percent of National supporters.
When asked whether recent scandals such as the Jevon McSkimming saga affected their trust, 51.3 percent said their trust was unchanged, 36.1 percent said it had decreased, 10.4 percent were unsure, and 2.2 percent said their trust had increased.
Responding to the poll Police Commissioner Richard Chambers said, “There’s always going to be some communities that have have less trust and confidence, or more trust and confidence in policing. That isn’t new.
“None of that comes as a surprise – it just motivates me and my team more to work really hard.”
I have to say my trust in the upper echelons of the cops and justice system general is low, but recently having called the cops, the two I dealt with were a really great. So that has restored my faith a little. But yeah I guess it’s like everything, the higher you go the more corrupt they are…..mcskimming has not paid the price for ANYTHING

Who could possibly trust the police after watching them in operation on the grounds of Parliament House February 2022?
I certainly don’t trust them after an accident I had which resulted in my lodging a complaint with IPCA – the police investigating themselves. What a joke.
Also, just by the bye, can anyone confirm whether or not the police force and the government en masse was granted vaccine exemption? And if you know of any other exemptions? With a link to print source if possible?
The New Zealand Police and Defence Force were not granted vaccine exemptions; instead, the government’s mandatory vaccination order for these groups was overturned by the High Court in February 2022.
Get an android phone and put it in developer mode, then select the Bluetooth scan to include unassigned devices, then when you do a scan near anyone vaxxed the vax will show up as a MAC number, that’s how to tell who has taken the shot/s, when I tried it in the local supermarket it showed hundreds of them, next time you are near any cop do a scan and see what’s what.
Nobody asked us whether the scandals such as the police brutality on unarmed civilians in Wellington during the covid protests or the revenue gathering via traffic surveillance has changed public sentiment.
Mine has come to zero.
And I have not even mentioned the police collaboration with the family court, a mafia in its own right, xcuse the pun.
The whole system is rotten from the top down, so of course, the institutions, under that system are dysfunctional, as well. I’ll wager too, the actual level of distrust is much higher than this poll suggests. People are often cautious about criticising them given their intimidating, indifferent attitudes.
I would go as far as to say 1 in 4 cop’s don’t trust the cop’s.
The 80/20 rule working against us, as this is telling me that 80% trust the Corporate Administrative State. This needs reversing before anything changes, but I’m not holding by breath, as that 80% rely on ‘Big Brother’ for their daily bread.
A rack of police uniforms in a surplus emporium does make one wonder. Video of a woman being pulled out of a tent by her hair engenders peak anxiety. Seeing a recruitment advert for police in Hindi – well- wtf??
On a community level they almost do a good job though usually a bit slow. Whilst they’re good well intentioned people no doubt, they wear that uniform, and that uniform represents the thuggery of the state as we saw in Wellington.
