Oranga Tamariki admit botch up in OIA request

Oranga Tamariki news

The request from RNZ was for a quality assurance report into Oranga Tamariki’s sexual violence services.

Oranga Tamariki responded saying no quality assurance had been done.

But when RNZ submitted a revised request Oranga Tamariki provided an independent report which found the team in charge of the project to be ‘dysfunctional’ and ‘inadequate’ and ‘confused’.

The project was eventually canned by Oranga Tamariki in 2021 after $40 million had been spent on it.

Oranga Tamariki accepted it failed to engage properly with RNZ to understand what was wanted in the first place, according to a report by RNZ this morning.

‘Our view had been that your original request referred to quality assurance on programmes already up and running,’ it said, whereas the sexual violence services were still in the planning stage.

RNZ had asked for a copy of the most substantive quality assessment ‘related’ to each programme of work on sexual violence services.

Oranga Tamariki said it had learned it must seek clarification around OIA requests.

  1. What a bunch of bunnies, no wonder they, and many like government departments are in such a mess. That it concerns a unit charged with the safety of our most vulnerable is quite frankly a travesty. It is time for a major clean out and some proper thinking as to its purpose and future..
