Foreign Minister Winston Peters confirmed that New Zealand was aware of discussions about a potential Israeli strike on Iran before it occurred, but was “surprised, but not totally surprised” when it happened.
“There had been talk of that but not in a way the New Zealand government was remotely involved in,” Peters said, stressing New Zealand’s role as an observer rather than a participant. He urged New Zealanders in Israel and Iran to leave if possible, as the conflict between the two nations intensifies with ongoing deadly attacks.
Peters reiterated New Zealand’s firm stance on diplomacy, de-escalation, and a peaceful two-state solution for Israel and Palestine. “We want peace and we want balance and calm… the problems in the Middle East don’t come from one bad actor alone,” he said. Denouncing extremism, occupation, and civilian suffering on all sides, Peters warned of the broader implications of global instability, calling the current international climate “probably the worst” since the Cuban Missile Crisis.
“We want diplomacy – as we’ve just engaged in, in Europe recently and in Jakarta in the last few days. We want de-escalation. We want a two-state solution with Israel and Palestinians living in peace and security side by side.
“We want peace and we want balance and calm, and the fact to be acknowledged that the problems in the Middle East don’t come from one bad actor alone.
“We don’t want New Zealanders in harm’s way, we don’t want a nuclear Iran, we don’t want civilians starving or dying in military conflict and we don’t want Hamas holding hostages and terrorising Palestinians, and we don’t want Israel occupying Palestinian lands.”

Where is the statement from the NZ government condemning Israel for its unprovoked attack on Iran?
Over the weekend Peters put out a joint statement with the Indonesian Foreign Minister reaffirming their respect for sovereignty , political independence and territorial integrity and reiterated their call for compliance with the United Nations Charter and international law.
However they were talking about Russia and Ukraine not Israel and Iran. Maybe the NZ government should show some consistency in the way it reacts to conflicts by first condemning Israel, banning export and import trade with Israel and sending humanitarian aid to Iran, similar to the action taken against Russia.
Why don’t we want a nuclear Iran? Lots of nations use nuclear energy, why should Iran be any different? Suffice to say, as per usual, the sort of comments I’ve come to expect from NZ govts. Better in my view, they said nothing.
