An elderly man with dementia who went missing near Ōrere Point, Hauraki Gulf, overnight has been safely found after a swift aerial search by police.
Police were alerted just before 1am after the man’s son reported him missing. The man, in his 80s, had not been seen for several hours and concerns were raised due to his limited mobility and unfamiliarity with the area, which borders Ōrere Point Beach.
Inspector Matt Hoyes, Counties Manukau South Area Prevention Manager, said the Police Eagle helicopter was quickly deployed given the remote location and potential risks.
“Eagle was able to locate the man in nearby bushland shortly after arrival,” said Inspector Hoyes. “Tactical flight officers then guided the informant to his father’s location just before ground staff reached the scene.”
Hoyes credited the quick response of the Eagle crew for the successful outcome. “This incident highlights the important role our aerial units play in not just tracking offenders but also protecting vulnerable members of our community.”
well done !
