Police are investigating a series of suspicious fires that broke out at four churches in Masterton early Saturday morning, with authorities suspecting arson.

Emergency services responded to the first blaze at 4:25 a.m., and within minutes, fires were reported at three other churches, causing damage ranging from moderate to significant.

The affected churches include the Anglican Church of the Epiphany, St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, Masterton Baptist Church, and Equippers Church Masterton.

In addition, police discovered evidence suggesting three other churches—St. James Union Church, the Kingdom Hall, and the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints—were also targeted but did not catch fire.

Fire and Emergency New Zealand (FENZ) crews responded from across the Wairarapa region and as far as Avalon Station in Lower Hutt. Police and firefighters remain at the scenes, conducting investigations and patrols in Masterton and nearby towns Featherston and Carterton.

Authorities urge anyone with information to contact Police via 105 or provide anonymous tips through Crime Stoppers at 0800 555 111.
