The Chiefs have edged the Highlanders 23–26 in Dunedin, extending their winning streak over the southern side to eight matches after surviving a late surge in an emotionally charged contest played following the tragic passing of Angus Ta’avao’s young son.
After the Highlanders struck first through Jona Nareki, the Chiefs responded with forward dominance and sharp counterattacking play, including tries to Samisoni Taukei’aho and Leroy Carter to take control of the match.
A decisive second-half spell, highlighted by a long-range break involving Josh Lord and Tupou Vaa’i and Taukei’aho’s second try, gave the visitors breathing room before late Highlanders tries secured a losing bonus point, with missed conversions ultimately denying the home side a remarkable comeback victory.
