Police are seeking information from the public about a spate of thefts across the wider Whangārei area in the past two months.

Approximately 180 sleepers have been reported as stolen over this period, Whangārei Area Investigations Manager Detective Senior Sergeant Shane Pilmer says.

“These reports have been made from various yards across the region,” he says.

“We suspect that these sleepers are likely being sold off for financial gain, and it’s likely that these are being sold to unsuspecting members of the community.”

The latest theft was reported in the Port Whangārei area on 18 September.

Police are asking for people to come forward if they have knowledge about the thefts.

“We also want to hear from anyone who might have been offered sleepers at a cheap price in the past couple of months.

“Our Tactical Crime Unit is investigating and collating reports, and the team are keen to identify those responsible,” Detective Senior Sergeant Pilmer says.

People should apply common sense and remain vigilant.

“If something appears too good, or too cheap, to be true then it probably is.”

Anyone with information can update Police online or call 105 using the reference number 250919/9513.

Information can also be provided anonymously via Crime Stoppers on 0800 555 111.

  1. Yep caught some “locals” tsking the ones from here in the BOP.. Told them to stop was called ‘racist’. Rang the council, not interested. Who cares anymore. Just keep destroying this once fine country you feral arseholes I am already planning my departure from feral low life’s who haven’t worked a day in their life,, drop rubbish, let their kids play on the road, eat themselves to death, expect everthing for free and then blame people like me for all their problems. The latest gaslight is that I have ‘skinny privilege’ apparently. Well f you and all the other feral lowlifes, you win, I’m OUT. Going to a place to live amongst similar respectful and decent people such as myself.

  2. It was me. I took the sleepers for the up-and-coming protest in Wellington. Need to fortify the grounds outside parliament so the police can’t so easily assault us and burn our camping equipment.

  3. Being American, I needed to research what a NZ “sleeper” was. Got it👍
A railroad sleeper in the US would be the railcar folks sleep in while traveling across USA. js

  4. They would have probably made more money taking the rails to a recycler – although they would be a bit heavy to haul around.

  5. Maybe the sleepers woke up and decided to leave by themselves.

Given all the nonsense happening in the world today, anything’s possible.
