Police updates on accidents and investigations for 24 June 2022.
Fatal crash, Kaitaia
One person has died following a two-vehicle crash near Clough Rd, Kaitaia.
Two other people are in a serious condition and two are in a serious but stable condition and have been airlifted to hospital.
Police were called to the scene on State Highway 1, Kaitaia shortly after 5pm yesterday.
The Serious Crash Unit has been advised.
No further information is available at this stage.
Second fatal Northland crash
One person has died following a head-on crash involving two cars towing trailers on SH1 in Northland.
The crash occurred north of Okaihau just after 7pm yesterday.
The driver of one car was killed and the two occupants of the second car both have moderate injuries.
Arrest following fleeing driver incident, Kakanui
A 32-year-old Palmerston North man has been arrested following a fleeing driver incident on Wednesday.
The man was driving a stolen vehicle on the Waianakarua-Kakanui Road when he was signalled to pull over by Police about 20 minutes south of Oamaru.
The vehicle failed to stop and instead continued towards Kakanui township.
Staff deployed spikes on the Maheno-Kakanui Road in an attempt to stop the vehicle, but the driver avoided these and continued driving. It was successfully spiked further down the road, and eventually came to a stop in the Kakanui township.
The man attempted to decamp on foot, but was arrested shortly after at a property in Kakanui, with the assistance of a Police dog and the Dunedin Armed Offenders Squad.
Staff located an imitation firearm, a sawn-off shotgun, ammunition, drugs and knives in the stolen vehicle.
The vehicle is understood to have been stolen in Oamaru on Tuesday.
The man is also believed to be responsible for another motor vehicle theft in Oamaru on Thursday, 19 May, and Police had two outstanding warrants for his arrest.
He appeared in the Timaru District Court yesterday on a variety of charges including unlawfully taking a motor vehicle, unlawful possession of a firearm, and failing to stop.
Water incident, Maruia Falls
Emergency services are responding to a report of a person missing in the water at Maruia Falls, Shenandoah.
About 12:10pm today one person was pulled from the water, however a second person is still outstanding.
A rescue helicopter has been dispatched and on call Search and Rescue staff have been notified.
