Police have identified a suspect in the disappearance of a four-year-old boy who vanished from a remote sheep station in South Australia’s outback.

Gus Lamont was last seen on 27 September playing outside his home near Yunta, about 300km from Adelaide. The boy’s grandmother had left him unattended for around 30 minutes before discovering he was missing, triggering one of the largest search operations ever carried out in the state, involving extensive land and air efforts.

Authorities have confirmed the suspect is someone who lives on the property where Gus disappeared. Police have also emphasised that the boy’s parents are not being treated as suspects in the case.

Search teams spent weeks combing through approximately 470 square kilometres of land surrounding the Oak Park station homestead. While large-scale search efforts were scaled back in late October, a dedicated 12-member taskforce was formed to continue investigating the case.

As part of the investigation detectives re-examined statements from family members and identified what they described as inconsistencies in the timeline surrounding Gus’ disappearance. Police say one person living at the station has since stopped cooperating with investigators.

In January, officers returned to the property to carry out further searches, seizing several items including a vehicle, a motorcycle and electronic devices for examination.

Investigators initially explored three possible explanations for the disappearance: that Gus wandered away, was abducted, or that someone known to him was involved. Police have since ruled out abduction due to the isolated location and say there is no evidence the boy simply wandered off.

Police say the investigation remains active and ongoing, with officers committed to finding answers and determining what happened to Gus.
