Motorists are asked to take extra care on the recently re-opened Highway 5.

‘While we’re all pleased that we can travel the road again, just like us the road is still recovering from the recent devastating effects of Cyclone Gabrielle,’ said Inspector Angela Hallet, Road Policing Manager, Eastern District.

Temporary speed restrictions are in place for the safety of all road users. The restrictions are clearly signposted and will be enforced.

Police have an increased presence on SH5 and road-users should expect to see us anywhere at any time.

‘Please take extra care and allow additional time for travel, as there will be delays while the temporary speed restrictions are in place.’

Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency will be managing temporary closures of the road at night, while work to restore the road continues.

Motorists are encouraged to visit the Waka Kotahi Journey Planner website before they travel for real-time travel information, and updates on delays, roadworks and road closures.
