Former Auckland teacher Ian Ross McKinney, 78, who was previously convicted in 2017 for indecent assaults on two male international student boarders, has been sentenced to five months’ home detention for making over 400 intimate recordings of a 23-year-old Japanese woman staying at his Devonport home in 2023.

The woman, who was on an extended working holiday, was filmed naked and in states of undress through a bathroom gap between March and December, leading her to cut short her trip.

McKinney initially denied the extent of his offending but later expressed remorse, engaged in counselling, and agreed to pay $12,000 in emotional harm reparation.

Judge Paul Murray called it a “significant breach of trust” but opted against prison due to McKinney’s age, health issues, and rehabilitation efforts, imposing post-detention monitoring conditions.
