A Health NZ review has uncovered significant failures within the National Cervical Screening Register, revealing thousands of eligible women were not notified when they were due for cervical cancer screening because of data and system errors.
The report found longstanding governance, data quality and technical shortcomings that undermined the programme’s ability to identify and contact patients, raising concerns about delayed diagnoses and patient safety.
Health NZ said it has begun addressing the defects, but the findings have prompted fresh scrutiny over oversight, transparency and the reliability of one of the country’s key cancer prevention programmes. Read more at HealthNZ.govt.nz.
