Rolling teacher strikes leave thousands of secondary students without classes this week

Teacher strikes news

Thousands of Year 12 and 13 students across New Zealand missed classes on Monday as secondary teachers began a week of rolling industrial action after rejecting the government’s latest pay offer.

The Post Primary Teachers’ Association (PPTA) said the strikes, which will see Year 11 students affected Tuesday, Year 10 on Wednesday, and Year 9 on Thursday, highlight concerns over pay, working conditions, and pastoral care support for increasingly complex student needs.

The government and Public Service Commissioner argue the $361 million package on offer is strong and fair, while criticising the disruption to families and schools.

Union leaders insist the government has yet to re-engage in negotiations, saying teachers are sending a clear message for fair conditions that will attract and retain staff.

  1. What are they teaching in these schools anyway?
The earth is rotating at over 1000mph and over the speed of sound
The earth revolves around the sun
That race mixing miscegenation cultural diversity is good
Who in their right mind would want to be a teacher now?
    Schools have become collection points
Day care centres for indoctrination and mind control
Into a future culture of abeyance and subservience

  2. I can see where these teachers are coming from, its not a nice job these days and the educational system is broken. Two I have spoken to were very open about its lack of funding for equipment, faculties and the actual NCEA system, was generally considered dysfunctional. They have to cope with all of this and its no doubt stressful.

Yet we have a government that can throw money at military crap we don’t need and help prop up the Ukraine regime. Time to go National and Labour, ideally “forever”. We don’t need you in office!

    • Equipment? What, a pen and paper?
Ffs. What will they think of next. Why don’t they strike during the 16 weeks holiday they get a year? Oh yeah too busy lying in the beach.

  3. No phones in school (or car, for that matter).
Also, no government in the classroom ( let the headmaster and older experienced teachers run the school).
I know, I’m a dinosaur, nearly seventy now

  4. Disestablish the Ministry of Education. What do they do. They get the same funding as all the schools combined. But no teachers in it …
