A deep subtropical low is forecast to bring a significant multi-hazard weather event across New Zealand from late Wednesday through Friday, with the most severe impacts expected in the upper North Island.
Northland faces a Red Heavy Rain Warning with up to 320mm of rain, posing threats to life from flooding, slips, and dangerous river conditions, while many other regions including Auckland, Coromandel, and Bay of Plenty are under Orange warnings with potential upgrades. Strong northeast winds gusting up to 120 km/h and large coastal waves are also expected, increasing risks of damage and hazardous travel.
Parts of the South Island, particularly Tasman and the West Coast, will also experience heavy rain, while multiple regions nationwide are under watches for further deterioration. Authorities are urging residents to avoid travel, prepare for possible evacuations, and stay updated as conditions worsen.
