South Island schools to receive 59 new classrooms

South Island education

The Government has announced a $62.5 million education infrastructure package for the South Island, funding 59 new classrooms and upgrades at several schools to accommodate growing communities and improve learning environments.

The investment includes a new 18-classroom primary school in Lincoln South, classroom expansions at schools across Canterbury and other South Island regions, additional learning support facilities for Maitai School, and funding to address long-standing building issues at four schools.

Education Minister Erica Stanford said the programme will help meet rising demand in fast-growing areas such as Rolleston, Lincoln and Darfield while supporting local construction jobs.

The package also includes funding to secure a site for a future high school in Queenstown, bringing total South Island school growth investment over the past three Budgets to around $300 million.
