Skippers Bridge near Queenstown will remain fully closed due to critical safety concerns after an inspection revealed failures in the suspension cables.

Queenstown Lakes District Council (QLDC) announced the indefinite closure to all traffic, cyclists, and pedestrians. An inspection late last year found broken wires within the cables that support the bridge, compromising its integrity and load-bearing capacity.

QLDC’s Acting General Manager of Property & Infrastructure, Roger Davidson, acknowledged the significant impact on residents, tour operators, and recreational users but said public safety was the council’s priority.
