Firefighters are working to contain a diesel leak from a pipe in the South Auckland suburb of Manurewa, with three crews at the scene near a petrol station on Great South Road since 6.30am.
Workers appeared focused on a pipeline running across a road bridge next to the under-construction U-Go service station, while a Fire and Emergency spokesperson said the cause of the leak was unclear.
However, FENZ assistant commander Chris Delfos told the legacy media it appeared there had been some form of “sabotage” to the pipeline, with firefighters working to prevent further fuel loss as the quantity involved remained unknown.
Authorities were not aware when the suspected sabotage occurred, though a telecom phone line was damaged around 3am, and the site was cordoned off with a lane closed as traffic was diverted.
