A 22-year-old Tauranga man, who lived on his relatives’ property, betrayed family trust by repeatedly sexually assaulting and raping his cousin, aged 8-10, between early 2021 and April 2024.

The offenses included sneaking into her bedroom at night under false pretenses, showing her pornography, indecent assaults in various locations including while she showered, and rapes even when family members were home or in the same room.

He pleaded guilty to three counts of sexual violation by rape and four counts of indecent assault on a child.

The court applied discounts for the offender’s youth, guilty plea, lack of prior convictions, and “mild cognitive impairments”, resulting in a final sentence of four-and-a-half years’ imprisonment from an initial eight-and-a-half-year starting point.

  1. He won’t last long in the ‘system’…like most child rapists; they end-up shanked, beaten to death, suicided, or severely brain-injured!
Those who knew about this in the girl’s home- when are they going to be charged as accessories?
This also goes to show how the ‘system’ failed someone who had ‘mild cognitive inmpairments’..from perhaps parents using drugs pre-birth, fetal alcohol syndrome, or an undiagnosed Autism Spectrum Disorder..?
What happens at the end of four years (IF he lives that long…)?

  2. When we first arrived in NZ, one of the first movies we were told to watch was “Once Were Warriors” and I was horrified…and scared to be alone in Papatoetoe where we stayed until we got our first home… I was told it was a good take on the reality of Maori life…. Yep… still seems like it’s the way of it alright… disgusting…not to say they are the only ones committing such horrors, not at all… but what a shame and a sham of an existence…wahine need to step up and blast these creatures doing this ….
