The popular Doubtless Bay Fishing Contest in the Far North is scheduled to take place on 27 and 28 January.
Ngāti Kahu representative Wikatana Popata criticised the event organisers for not consulting with the Ngati Kahu tribe, calling it disrespectful and accusing them of ‘racism’.
Popata threatened to block boat ramps and beach access in the area to prevent the contest from happening in their tribal territory, citing the need to protect the environment and fish stocks, which he claims have dramatically declined due to overfishing and such events. Popata said his stance was also in response to the broader issue of the new coalition government’s Treaty policies.
However, Margaret Mutu, chairwoman of Te Rūnanga-a-Iwi o Ngāti Kahu said Popata’s view was his personal one and not the official position of the iwi. Other iwi representatives and marae have yet to discuss the matter, she told legacy media.
Event organiser Nick Ryan said he was surprised by the accusations, saying it was the first such incident in the contest’s 40-year history. He was unaware of the need for consultation but had reached out to community members to address concerns. Ryan said the contest was a licensed community event compliant with Ministry of Primary Industry regulations and contributes proceeds to the community.

Who’s in the right here, exactly? Nobody seems to know the rules anymore, not the fishing tournament organiser, not the ministry, not even the other iwi. Who rules the land; the iwi? The beehive? That bumbling old globalist fart up in England? Whatever, let’s just scream “racism” at the sky and see what happens.
Maybe Seymour has a point when he says things like, “these conversations need to be had”, especially now when immigration is changing New Zealand so rapidly and profoundly. Maybe there’s an opportunity here for EVERYONE to gain, instead of staying on the +-25 year “give us more money” cycle we’ve had the past few decades.
