The Government has moved a step closer to advancing the proposed Marsden Point Rail Link, with KiwiRail identifying three infrastructure companies to compete in a design process aimed at reducing the project’s cost.
Rail Minister Winston Peters announced that Acciona, a Downer/HEB joint venture, and Martinus Rail have been selected to take part in a “design sprint” to further develop lower-cost options for the 19-kilometre rail connection to Northport.
The companies will examine ways to reduce earthworks, improve construction sequencing, address ground conditions, and explore alternative bridge and level crossing designs. Peters said the rail link was important for connecting Northport to the national rail network and supporting the port’s role in New Zealand’s export sector.
Peters said the Government had reviewed the project after a previous funding commitment of $410 million was followed by a significantly higher cost estimate from KiwiRail. The design process is intended to provide the Government with more detailed and cost-effective options before making any future funding decisions.
