Three American service members have been killed and five others wounded during ongoing US military operations against Iran, US officials confirmed, marking a shift from the opening day of the campaign when no casualties were reported by US sources.

Separately, rumours spread on social media that the USS Abraham Lincoln, one of several US aircraft carriers operating in the Gulf, had been hit. US Central Command swiftly dismissed the claims, stating that Iranian missiles were fired at the vessel but fell well short, and that the carrier continues to conduct strike operations against targets in Iran.
The deaths present a political complication for President Donald Trump, who campaigned on keeping the United States out of new wars — a position echoed by Vice President JD Vance and, until recently, Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard.
Despite the escalating conflict, diplomatic channels appear to be stirring. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi allegedly told his Omani counterpart that Tehran is open to genuine de-escalation efforts, according to a statement from Oman’s foreign ministry. Oman has been serving as a go-between in recent nuclear negotiations between the two countries, and the Omani foreign minister met with Vance in Washington on Friday. Araqchi nonetheless criticised the joint US-Israeli strikes, describing them as a source of heightened tension and alarm across the region.
President Trump told legacy media source that direct talks with Iran’s new leadership could be on the horizon. “They want to talk, and I have agreed to talk,” he was quoted as saying, adding that Iran had waited too long to engage. He gave no timeline for when those discussions would take place.
