Toitū Te Tiriti, a movement long viewed as closely aligned with Te Pāti Māori, has formally distanced itself from the party, with spokesperson Eru Kapa-Kingi criticising its leadership style, governance issues, and a perception of being reduced to a lobby group.
Kapa-Kingi, a former Te Pāti Māori vice president, accused the party of operating under a “dictatorship model” and failing to meet constitutional requirements, though he acknowledged not all claims could yet be substantiated publicly. He stressed the need for “kaupapa-based independence”, warning against an “ego-driven narrative” that only Te Pāti Māori could hold the Māori seats.
The move comes amid wider turbulence within the party, including the demotion of Kapa-Kingi’s mother, MP Mariameno Kapa-Kingi, as whip. Te Pāti Māori has strongly rejected the allegations as “misleading and inaccurate”.
