Tragic death in Wellington highlights need for action on inner city safety – Green MP

Wellington death

Green MP Tamatha Paul has called attention to the pressing need for action following the death of 21-year-old Luke Smith after an assault in Wellington’s Courtenay Place.

Smith’s death is now the subject of a homicide inquiry, and has raised concerns about public safety in the city’s nightlife district. Paul said alcohol was as a major contributor to the city’s rising anti-social behaviour.

Wellington’s hospitality insiders acknowledged the increased challenge of keeping the streets safe, citing issues like preloading, public sector cuts, and closed venues as contributing factors to the growing problem.

Bar owners highlighted the efforts being made within their establishments but admitted that safety beyond their doors remains a challenge.

The recent closure of Reading Cinemas, a key entertainment venue, has led to a noticeable decline in foot traffic and vibrancy in Courtenay Place, exacerbating the problem.

Both officials and business owners agree that revitalising the city center and addressing alcohol-related harm are essential to restoring safety and vibrancy in Wellington’s nightlife.

  1. Imagine what human behaviour will be like in Welly post 8.0+ earthquake…IF the place hasn’t sunk below sea level or permanently damaged from subsequent tsunamis generated by the Hikorangi Faultline offshore…

    • Good point
I had read Wellington harbour used to be a Lake and had a river flowing out of it
Most probably being an extinct volcano

  2. Oh and the Labour/ Greenstone visionary stance on law and order (cuddles Costa, don’t be racist!!) has nothing to do with this rampant demise of safety???? Hypocrisy is the word that comes to mind.
