US President Donald Trump has suffered a Supreme Court setback after the justices blocked his administration from introducing new safeguards for mail-in voting ahead of November’s midterm elections.
The court allowed a federal injunction against the US Postal Service measures to remain in place, preventing the administration from immediately implementing rules Trump argues would strengthen ballot security and help ensure postal votes are issued only to eligible voters.
Trump slammed the outcome, describing it as another damaging decision for Republicans and accusing the Supreme Court of failing to support measures he said were necessary to protect the integrity of American elections.
The president’s March executive order instructed the USPS to introduce additional controls over election mail, including unique barcodes on postal-ballot envelopes and an information-sharing system allowing election authorities to provide data concerning voters receiving mail ballots.
The administration has defended the measures as a legitimate exercise of federal authority over the postal system, arguing that states choosing to use the US mail for elections cannot simultaneously insist that election material is beyond USPS regulation.
The proposals nevertheless encountered strong opposition from Democratic-led states and voting-rights organisations, which argued that introducing substantial procedural changes shortly before an election could cause disruption and prevent legitimate votes from being counted.
Justice Brett Kavanaugh joined the majority in leaving the injunction intact for the 2026 elections, but his reasoning provided some encouragement for the administration’s broader legal position. He wrote that there was “at least a fair prospect” that the final USPS rule falls within the agency’s statutory authority, while concluding that implementing it during the current election cycle would be premature.
Conservative Justices Samuel Alito and Clarence Thomas went further, dissenting from the decision and suggesting that the underlying legal challenge to Trump’s policy was ultimately unlikely to succeed.
Several Republican-led states have also supported the administration’s position. At the same time, some Republican election officials warned that imposing major procedural changes when ballots and election materials had already been prepared could create practical difficulties regardless of the merits of the policy itself.
The dispute therefore remains alive. Rather than definitively finding Trump’s proposed safeguards unlawful, the Supreme Court has effectively prevented their introduction immediately before the midterms while the underlying litigation continues.
Trump responded by saying the Supreme Court had “really let our Country down” and criticising a series of recent decisions against his administration.
The president has made tightening mail-in voting procedures a major election-integrity priority, maintaining that postal voting requires stronger protections against ineligible participation and other potential abuses.
