U.S. President Donald Trump says he has called off a previously expected second wave of attacks on Venezuela, citing what he described as growing cooperation from the country’s leadership.
In an early-morning post, Trump said Venezuela had begun releasing large numbers of political prisoners as a sign it was seeking peace, a move he called “important and smart.”
He said the decision was also influenced by progress in joint efforts to rebuild and modernise Venezuela’s oil and gas infrastructure, adding that further military action now appeared unnecessary.
While U.S. ships will remain in position for ‘security reasons’, Trump said major oil companies are preparing to invest at least US$100 billion in the energy sector, with meetings scheduled at the White House to advance those plans.
