Trump issues mass pardons for January 6 offenders

January 6 pardons news

US President Donald Trump has granted pardons to approximately 1,500 individuals convicted of offenses related to the events at the United States Capitol on January 6, 2021.

The executive order, signed in the Oval Office on Monday shortly after Trump began his second term, provides a “full, complete, and unconditional pardon” to those involved in the incident. Additionally, 14 individuals had their sentences commuted.

“We hope that they come out tonight, frankly,” Trump said during a press briefing, describing the pardons as a step toward addressing “a grave national injustice” and promoting “national reconciliation.”

The president also directed the attorney general to dismiss all pending indictments connected to the events, emphasising his belief that the move was necessary to heal divisions within the country.
