New York Attorney General Letitia James — who spent years pursuing Donald Trump with what critics called a politically motivated fraud case — has been hit with federal criminal charges of bank fraud and making false statements to a financial institution.
The indictment, filed in the Eastern District of Virginia, accuses James of lying about a mortgage on a Norfolk, Virginia property, allegedly misrepresenting it as a personal residence while using it as a rental investment.
The indictment follows growing calls from Trump and his allies for accountability over what they’ve described as the weaponisation of law enforcement against conservatives.
Trump-appointed prosecutor Lindsey Halligan said the case proves “no one is above the law.” James, who famously led the civil case that resulted in a half-billion-dollar judgment against Trump later overturned on appeal, claims the new charges are politically motivated. But her critics say it’s a reckoning long overdue for an attorney general accused of using her office to settle political scores. James is scheduled to appear in court on October 24.
