US President Donald Trump has predicted that Northern Ireland will eventually unite with the Republic of Ireland, drawing criticism from unionist political leaders who insist the region’s future remains firmly within the United Kingdom.
Speaking in Dublin following talks with Irish Prime Minister Micheál Martin, Trump said on Saturday that he would “love to see” Ireland reunified and suggested there was little reason to delay the process.
“I think it would be a great feather… in everybody’s cap if that happened. It’s going to happen eventually. Might as well happen now,” Trump told reporters, adding that Martin was the “right man” to help advance the issue.
Trump acknowledged that Britain would inevitably have a say in any constitutional change but maintained that a united Ireland “would be a great thing.” He also praised relations between Washington and Dublin, describing Martin as a friend and saying ties between the two countries were stronger than ever.
Later, at the US ambassador’s residence, Trump conceded that his comments were likely to prove contentious, describing Irish reunification as an issue on which “no matter what you say, there’s no good answer.”
The president made similar remarks earlier this year when he floated the prospect of a “merger” between Northern Ireland and the Republic.
Northern Ireland has remained part of the United Kingdom since the establishment of the Irish Free State following partition in the early 1920s. Its constitutional position is governed in part by the 1998 Good Friday Agreement, which provides for the possibility of reunification if a majority in Northern Ireland supports such a change. Under the agreement, the UK Government can call a referendum, commonly known as a border poll, when the statutory conditions are considered to have been met.
Trump’s comments prompted a sharp response from Democratic Unionist Party leader Gavin Robinson, who argued that Northern Ireland’s current status reflects the democratic wishes of its population.
“President Trump knows better than most that elections matter,” Robinson wrote on X, adding that Northern Ireland would continue to choose membership of the UK and the security he said it provides.
UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham also rejected the prospect of an imminent vote during a visit to Northern Ireland last month, saying a referendum on reunification was “off the table.”
