US President Donald Trump has suggested that Washington could soon expand its anti-narcotics campaign against alleged Venezuela-linked drug operations to include action on land, intensifying already strained relations with Caracas.
Speaking to reporters at the White House on Friday, Trump claimed US efforts had sharply reduced maritime drug trafficking tied to Venezuela, asserting that narcotics smuggling by sea had fallen by more than 90 percent.
He credited stepped-up naval operations for what he described as unprecedented interdictions and said attention could soon shift beyond coastal waters. “We’ve knocked out drugs coming in by water at levels nobody’s ever seen,” Trump said, adding that operations on land could begin “pretty soon.”
The president did not provide details on where such actions might take place or what form they could take.
Since September, the United States has increased its military presence in the Caribbean and eastern Pacific, carrying out more than 20 operations against suspected drug-smuggling vessels. US officials argue the campaign has prevented large quantities of narcotics from reaching American shores.
Venezuela has strongly rejected US allegations linking the government to drug cartels. President Nicolás Maduro has accused Washington of using counter-narcotics operations as a pretext to destabilise and ultimately overthrow his administration.
Tensions escalated further this week after US authorities seized an oil tanker off Venezuela’s coast that was allegedly transporting sanctioned crude linked to Venezuela and Iran.
