At least two people have been killed and eight others critically wounded following a mass shooting at Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island, during final exams on Saturday afternoon.
Police say the gunman opened fire inside the university’s Barus and Holley engineering building at about 4.00pm local time before fleeing the scene. T
he suspect, described as an unidentified male dressed in black and appearing to be college-aged, was last seen leaving the building shortly after the shooting.
Multiple local law enforcement agencies are involved in the search, with assistance from the FBI and the US Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF). Authorities have not yet confirmed a motive.
Providence Mayor Brett Smiley said at least two people had died and eight others were being treated in hospital, describing their condition as critical but stable. He declined to confirm whether the victims were students or faculty members.

The university campus was placed on lockdown as a precaution while police secured the area and carried out searches. Investigators say the situation remains active and are urging anyone with information to contact authorities as the manhunt continues.
