US confirms weapons are now deployed in space

The United States has publicly acknowledged for the first time that it has deployed weapons in orbit, with officials saying the capability is intended to deter hostile action against American forces and satellites.

US Air Force Secretary Troy Meink disclosed the development during the Air & Space Forces Association’s 2026 Air, Space & Cyber Conference in Maryland, saying the Space Force now possesses “on-orbit space control weapons” capable of protecting US and allied forces from adversaries.

Meink offered no details about the systems involved and later indicated that his carefully chosen language reflected the sensitivity of the subject. He said maintaining US superiority in space, as well as in the air, was increasingly important as potential threats evolved.

The Washington Post cited an unnamed US official as saying such technology could potentially be used to disable or destroy an adversary’s satellite if it were being employed to target American personnel or spacecraft.

International law does not impose a blanket prohibition on weapons being stationed in space, although the 1967 Outer Space Treaty prohibits placing nuclear weapons or other weapons of mass destruction in orbit.

The disclosure comes as Washington expands its military focus beyond Earth. President Donald Trump created the US Space Force during his first term in 2019, describing space as a new domain of warfare. His administration has also advanced the Golden Dome missile-defence initiative, which envisages a multilayered shield incorporating space-based interceptors.

The concept has drawn comparisons with President Ronald Reagan’s 1980s Strategic Defense Initiative, commonly known as “Star Wars,” although that programme was eventually scaled back without its proposed orbital weapons becoming operational.

Russia has criticised Washington’s expanding military ambitions in space. Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov warned earlier this year that the Golden Dome programme threatened strategic stability and accused the US of contributing to the militarisation of space.

The US, Russia, China and India have all demonstrated anti-satellite capabilities. Russia notably destroyed one of its own defunct Soviet-era satellites during a weapons test in 2021, maintaining that the operation complied with international law.

  1. They told Us Patriot Missiles worked too
Which don’t work now just like they have never worked
The US never could afford protection to the Gulf States
    Only in early warning
The whole thing was a grift from the start
    Just like Iron Dome

  2. Trumps Golden Dome (missile defense system)?
That’s just pie in the sky
    Like Iron Dome
Or eye in the sky if You’re listening to Allan Parsons
Another feeding frenzy for the military industrial complex
All pigs swill at the same trough

  3. Read this elsewhere. You can be sure the opposition will be exactly the same thing, assuming they have not already. Clearly it doesn’t yet amount to much but knowing the crazy USA, they will probably deploy nukes in time.

  4. So now America has announced global claim to the entire atmosphere, but allowed all previous nuclear treaties to lapse, as in the Russian American treaties. So can we now logically conclude that America is a law to themselves ( or whoever really runs that nation ) and all other mortals have to just suck it up. What was the real outcome of WW2, post Cold War realignment as it appears the west is deliberately creating a new global empire.
