Wellington Water CEO Tonia Haskell resigns following independent report

Wellington Water’s chief executive, Tonia Haskell, will step down on Friday after an independent report revealed a significant budget error.

Haskell, who has been in the role since early 2023, oversaw the growth of the capital programme for water assets from $60 million to $330 million.

The report found however that staff took four months to inform the region’s councils of a $51 million budget discrepancy over three years.

Wellington has faced numerous water issues recently, including aging infrastructure and frequent leaks. The board will soon start the process of appointing a new chief executive.

“Working for Wellington Water has been a privilege,” Haskell said in a statement.

“The team at Wellington Water, its supplier whānau and partners are incredibly smart, hard-working and dedicated to improving water outcomes for the region. I am proud to have been part of that.”
