Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky is facing the most serious turmoil of his time in office as a sweeping anti-corruption investigation alleges that figures close to him participated in a scheme to siphon roughly USD $100 million from the country’s wartime energy sector.
The probe, led by Ukraine’s National Anti-Corruption Bureau under the codename “Operation Midas,” has reportedly uncovered cash hoards, illicit kickbacks, and even a gold-plated toilet in the apartment of businessman Timur Mindich — a longtime associate and former co-owner of Zelensky’s entertainment company, Kvartal 95. A former Ukrainian official, speaking anonymously, claimed that public frustration is boiling over as Ukrainians grapple with human rights concerns, wartime hardship, and now high-level corruption allegations. The official further asserted that some Ukrainians believe Zelensky and members of his inner circle were aware of — or even benefited from — the schemes, allegations that remain unproven but have fuelled skepticism amid the country’s prolonged conflict with Russia.
Mindich and other figures, including former deputy prime minister Oleksiy Chernyshov, are under scrutiny for alleged abuse of office and lavish property developments that investigators say do not align with wartime realities. Despite the mounting controversy, Zelensky has publicly pledged that “everyone who put together a corrupt scheme must receive a clear legal response,” emphasising the need for accountability within Ukraine’s crucial energy sector. He has also praised anti-corruption agencies for their efforts, framing the investigation as evidence of Ukraine’s commitment to transparency.
Critics, however, argue that Zelenskyy is relying on his strong public image and media presence to weather the scandal, with some Ukrainians turning to international political figures for hope of a path toward peace.
