Bulgarian government resigns after nationwide anti-corruption protests

Bulgaria’s government has resigned following weeks of mass anti-corruption protests and mounting political pressure, Prime Minister Rosen Zhelyazkov announced on Thursday.

The decision comes as the administration faced its sixth no-confidence vote and just weeks before Bulgaria is scheduled to adopt the euro on January 1.

Public anger intensified after the government proposed a 2026 budget drafted in euros that included tax increases and higher social security contributions, a move critics said reflected deeper systemic corruption and poor governance.

Despite withdrawing the budget last week, demonstrators continued to demand Zhelyazkov’s departure along with that of other senior political figures, citing years of failed attempts to stamp out corruption and chronic political instability marked by seven elections in four years.

Although the ruling coalition was expected to defeat the latest no-confidence motion, Zhelyazkov said his cabinet would resign regardless.

President Rumen Radev, who had previously voiced support for the protesters’ demands, will now consult parliamentary parties on forming a new government. Should they fail, he will appoint a caretaker administration to oversee the country until fresh elections can be arranged.
