Prince William haunted by Diana’s manipulated interview as new book exposes BBC deceit

New book Dianarama exposes Prince Willaim's trauma following infamous BBC interview

Prince William continues to carry profound emotional scars from Princess Diana’s 1995 Panorama interview, which author and investigative journalist Andy Webb argues was secured through manipulation and deceit that irreparably damaged her life — and ultimately contributed to her death.

Webb, whose new book Dianarama draws on two decades of investigation, told Fox News Digital that William lives with “a wound that will not heal” as he seeks full clarity on how Diana was coerced into the explosive broadcast that publicly shattered the royal family.

Diana, already vulnerable and distrustful, was lured into the interview by BBC journalist Martin Bashir, who used forged bank statements and fabricated claims — including that palace staff were spying on her, her phone was tapped, and Prince Charles wanted her killed — to exploit her fears and isolate her from trusted advisers.

The interview’s fallout was devastating. Encouraged to speak openly about her failing marriage, mental health struggles, and self-harm, Diana unknowingly played into Bashir’s narrative.

Queen Elizabeth II soon ordered a formal divorce, and Diana’s isolation deepened as she dismissed long-time aides she no longer trusted. Webb argues that Bashir’s misconduct effectively dismantled her support network, leaving her surrounded by less reliable figures during the final years of her life. Diana died two years later in a Paris car crash while fleeing paparazzi.

For William and Harry — then just 13 and 11 — the interview was deeply traumatic, forcing them to see their mother publicly dissect her marriage and personal pain. The 2021 Dyson inquiry later confirmed Bashir had breached BBC rules and that the corporation attempted to cover up his wrongdoing.

William said the BBC’s failures “contributed significantly to her fear, paranoia and isolation,” while Harry blamed a broader culture of exploitation that “ultimately took her life.” Webb says William remains determined to uncover the full truth, believing his mother’s fate “might have been different” had she known Bashir’s allegations were fabricated.

And why were the cameras not operating in the Alma Tunnel in France where Diana was assassinated?
Seems to be for all the security they never seem to be working when needed most (7/7)

  2. The UK government have been placed in a difficult position here. On one hand the there is the future King and give Diana’s family justice.

On the other hand, the BBC is second oldest media organisation to distribute false information on behalf of the government. The first was and still is the newspapers.

Ultimately, people are walking away from the BBC, not paying licensing fees. Essentially, the BBC is broadcasting, but not that many people are watching or listening.
